Tips For Returning To Your Personal Trainer After A Long Absence

Many people struggle with varying degrees of motivation when they're trying to get in shape. If you've had a gym membership and then let it lapse, you may be familiar with this feeling. Getting into personal training can be a good way to stay motivated as you work toward your fitness goals, but you may not be sure how to proceed if you had a previous partnership with a trainer. You might not want to choose a different trainer out of fears of this being awkward, but you may also be unaware of how to reconnect with your old trainer. The best option is to contact your old trainer and specify that you want to get back to working out. Here are some tips to employ.

Offer An Honest Apology

You shouldn't feel badly about stopping your relationship with your trainer in the past. Every trainer has had clients quit, so it's doubtful that your trainer is holding a grudge. You may, however, have a reason to apologize. For example, if you didn't show up to your last training session and didn't call to cancel, this may leave a slightly sore spot in the trainer's mind. Offer a simple and honest apology. For example, an effective statement could be, "I'm very sorry about no-showing our last session. I have no excuse, but I won't do it again."

Demonstrate Your Commitment

While you can definitely talk about how committed you feel to working out with your personal trainer from now on, your best option is to show your commitment instead of just talk about it. There are several ways of doing so. Being early to each of your upcoming training sessions is a good approach, as it working hard during each of them. If your personal trainer gives you some exercises to work on before your next session together, be dedicated to working on them. Any trainer can tell if his or her client has been doing the "homework" or not.

Don't Dwell On The Past

You might feel a little uneasy about how your previously partnership with the personal trainer ended, but it's important to move on after you've apologized. Dwelling on the past will only keep it in both of your minds, which isn't beneficial. For example, when you leave each session, don't make a point of telling your trainer how you promise to show up for the next one, unlike in the past when you no-showed him or her. Instead, just thank the trainer for his or her help and say that you look forward to your next engagement.
